Fitness Myth: Spot Reduction
Spot reduction is the myth that exercising
a body part results in fat loss from that particular body part.
Examples of the myth are that leg lifts lead to fat-free thighs
and crunches lead to a flat stomach. Leg lifts will burn a few
calories but not enough to make a difference in your appearance.
Crunches will help strengthen your abdominal muscles but will
not lead to a flat stomach. Spot reduction is a myth because the
body determines the area where fat is lost. The type of exercise
is irrelevant. The most effective fitness programs include aerobic
exercise, strength training and healthy eating. However, the bottom
line is that calories expended must be more than calories ingested.
Why should I do crunches if I need
to lose fat anyway?
Every exercise program should
include abdominal exercises. Strong abdominal muscles, whether
they are covered with fat or defined, help maintain a strong back.
When your back is strong, risk of injury is reduced when lifting
and carrying heavy items and when participating in sports. Abdominal
exercises will improve the appearance of the abdomen when
overall body fat is reduced.
